Another contributor spotlight - this one from Melbourne’s Celeste Blewitt, who sends an email like this every Wednesday (her time) that I pull from. Today I’m including the whole thing (formatting tweaks and added images notwithstanding) so you get a sense of the POV and consideration I get to work with; it’s really cool. Thanks, Celeste!
======[SIC] DAY THIRTY EIGHT======
Hi Ben,
A short week here, there's a horse race, the race that stops the nation, which is an interesting narrative in these current times. Australia today, telecoms provider, Optus, was knocked out rendering transport, tech, banks, emergency services useless. A branding and comms disaster.
Also, Culture Club was excellent, great discussion on brand, culture and of course Goodwood. I'm always intrigued by the history of the buildings, the ancestry that goes along with that and the diversification required to keep an estate running. From a history perspective, these estates are fascinating, also from a business perspective, how they continue the tradition of being custodians of these estates for future generations.
And now, what I've enjoyed reading this week, some light light reading in amongst the tech:
'Forget Retirement, Become A Social- Media Star Instead (WSJ) Love this, the 'granfluencers', jumping into social media and leading the charge! A great example of keeping ahead of the trends.
'Checking In On Instagram's Threads' (BoF) Intriguing numbers and breakdown on the brands who have joined threads, hardly posted and those who went hard and fast and are now waiting to see what will occur and if Threads becomes the next platform.
'The Great Social Media-News Collapse' (The Atlantic) This is such a pertinent article. Charlie Warzel so often articulates the very thoughts of every aspect of tech, but this piece really highlights what is really changing in newsfeeds and how people consume journalism, if at all. A deep thought to think how newsfeeds are rapidly changing and where people seek out global news.
'How Phoebe Dickinson Became Upper-Crust England's Favourite Painter' (Town & Country) The background, the patronage, the paintings and the subjects. Leads a little into Goodwood style Britain, estates and aristocracy continuing along with history.
'How Madras Check Became A Preppy Style Essential' (BBC) The irony of style, of history and the essence of a fabric is fascinating. Madras fabric and the makings of it has such a richly textured background.
'Hollywood's Post Strike Blues' (The Powers That Be, Puck). Fascinating to listen to how the landscape of film and tv has changed post strike. The thoughts on what will be made, what will be cut and why certain genres may no longer be produced. It's certainly going to be a changed landscape.
Cheers,
Celeste
